Mission Statement

TLDR; Our goal is to be the go-to place for mathematics exercises and solutions for students and people who love mathematics.

Every year millions of students around the world go and buy the 27th edition of Calculus. Yet, this "latest and greatest edition" contains nothing new of value to the student compared to it's previous edition. It's virtually all the same exercises students have struggled with for the past 150 years.

This sounds much like a scam to us; or at the very least a giant grift.

The example of Calculus is of course just one of many topics, e.g. algebra, linear algebra, abstract algebra, differential equations, discrete mathematics etc... all suffering of the same pathology.

These books are generally expensive too.

Furthermore, they do not come with solution manuals in general either. You'd have to pay for those too - if they are available at all.

We find this situation unbearable.

For decade after decade students are studying the same problems all around the world, yet there is no place where they can have access to all this material. It is scattered around in books and solution manuals or last years exams with solutions.

We don't want to come off as trying to rip on other websites. They might have the best content available. But most of those sites are abandoned, broken or with limited number of exercises. Some look like they are at least 15 years old.

proofit hope to improve on this.

We hope to be that one place where students and people who enjoy mathematics in general go to find practice exercises on any topic, e.g., multi-dimensional integrals, 2nd order differential equations, rings etc... with solutions of course!

Here are a few of the things we'd like to achieve and make available to everyone:

  • a large browsable library of exercises;
  • publish exercises;
  • a convenient way to search for specific exercises, i.e., integration by parts, linear equations, infinite sums or series etc..;
  • submit solutions;
  • ask and answer questions;
  • forming of groups (think reddit pages) where users can publish exercises, solutions or engage in discussions;
  • make available an editor capable of handling LaTeX and render it instantly as a preview;
  • live collaboration using the above mentioned editor.

That's the gist of it while still leaving out plenty!

Concerning Everyone

We don't want to give the impression that proofit is only for students. Believe it or not, many people simply enjoy reading and solving math exercises.

We certainly do!

What is nicer to look at then a specacular Fourier series? What is more enjoyable than a clever existence proof? Induction proof? Infinite series? Do you think

e2πi+1=0e^{2\pi i} + 1 = 0

is one of the most beautiful things ever written?

We welcome you.

Concerning the Student

The old wisdom of "practice makes perfect" definitely holds for mathematics as well.

An integral a day keeps the re-exam away.

For example, by solving plenty of integrals you'll gain

  • confidence. You'll find out where you're likely to make an error (whenever the integral contains a minus sign, right?). You will them learn to take extra care on those exercises during exams.
  • speed. A common exam scenario is having plenty of (not especially difficult) exercises but little time. Even if this isn't the case for you, being able to solve integrals quickly? Yes please.

We don't deny that some books are quite capable of giving the students a deep understanding of the topics. Yet, for many, solving or going over solutions to plenty of exercises, it all suddenly "clicks" and a degree of understanding is achieved.

With certainty we proclaim that the best way to increase ones exam score is to do plenty of practice exercises. Even doing the same ones over and over if you don't have access to enough material. We donot recommend reading the same chapter over and over; avoid that at all costs - it's a trap.

The vast majority of students are not geniouses who only needs to see a solution and then be able to solve every similar exercise without thought.

LaTeX and the Editor

According to latex-project.org, LaTeX is:

... a high-quality typesetting system; it includes features designed for the production of technical and scientific documentation.

We believe that it is impossible to start learning LaTeX too early. In fact we believe it should be taught in schools as early as possible. If you happen to be a student aiming for a technical field it is a must. If you're just a math fan, don't you wanna know how to make all them fancy math-symbols!?

Luckily, it is fairly easy to learn the basics and get started. Our editor is of course capable of parsing LaTeX and rendering its output. We have an introductory guide to how it and LaTeX works.

Like everything else this takes some practice. But what better place is there to practice? We guarantee that you'll become an absolute LaTeX speed demon in no time and able to bang out equations in seconds!

The editor is also capable of live collaborations. Solve some math exercises with friends? Best way to spend your Friday evening surely...
